Career Aspirations

I felt that in a CV, there was not a real opportunity to say much about my aspirations. What my real thoughts are about my own career. Where I would like to go in the future and the type of career path I would like to take. This section is just a brief scratch pad for my thoughts on that.

So where do I see my career heading? I have worked in QinetiQ since my graduation. In this role I have worked mainly in software development. I would like to stay involved within the IT industry and there is a certain sense in staying in the healthcare arena due to the worthwhile nature of the work.

Throughout the technical phase of my career, immediate term, I would like to focus on Web development as I believe that this is where the future of application development lies. Distributed systems are much more the norm in today's society and in a world where bandwidth is less of an issue this is becoming the universal case. Ultimately I would like to take my technical skills and begin developing more customer facing roles, a customer engineer if you will.

One thing I am pretty sure about is my desire to not continue in the IT industry as a pure engineer into the twilight years of my career. To reiterate the above paragraph. Since I began my career (and especially more recently), my focus has been less pure technical and more customer centric. Ideally, I would like to expand this and I would like to move more towards actually helping and understanding customer needs and wants. Using my knowledge of the technical aspects of product development I feel I can use this alongside my people skills to offer a unique role. Much of my work has involved visiting customer sites and running workshops or offering consultancy to help with aspects such as Requirements Definition and Business Process Reengineering. I would like to make this kind of work a more full time part of my work.

Further into the future: Ever since University, my ultimate dream has been to own and run my own business. I don't see this being a reality for many years yet, as I would like to demonstrate my abilities through established business to others and to myself before I set off on my own. As it stands I still enjoy the challenges of progressing a career in an organisation that has a good reputation.
