Ideas from you too...
This campaign is not only a few ideas from me but an appeal for ideas from you.
The Problem
There isn't really a problem. The Worcester Festival is a fantastic idea but I think it needs more. If there was a problem it's that we don't publicise it enough.
The Ideas
I have several ideas that I think would be great in the Worcester Festival:
1.Bring back the concerts! (Not necessarily a wholly popular one this one, don't let this put you off the rest of the campaign!) What a great way of getting people into the city, if it is too noisy for New Road, get it going up at Sixways... come on Wyvern FM bring back XS and Party in The Park, that was great fun!
2. Bring back the floats. Sorely missed by the city, get the local businesses interested. I'll do a Seeworcester float if you give me the resources ;-). A carnival with floats and dancers and music is a great way to get a festival opened! Finish with some fireworks perhaps on the river?
3. Oak Apple Day. Something I came across when doing my research. This was an old practice of decorating the Guildhall with Oak boughs in honour of the return of Charles II from exile. In 1660 when the restoration came, Worcester was expecting some appreciation for the suffering it had suffered during the Civil War for its Royalist support. Worcester folk ate, drank and partied in the streets. Whilst Charles II never returned to Worcester (and the city felt quite miffed I can tell you!), the celebration of Oak Apple day was revived for a while at the end of the 18th Century. In Worcester fishermen walked through the streets with nets tricked with ribbons and oak branches and other industry decorated their instruments accordingly. What a great excuse for a party for the community and a chance to dress up in period costume and tread in our ancestors footsteps... great fun and a great pull for tourists!
