A Saucey Delight...

Well Worcester does have few little things it's proud of.

Aside to the history of Worcester, which is well known and documented, Worcester has become synonymous with all sorts of things.

This is my little homage to some of those things that you won't see listed in my history section.

As usual, if you can think of anything else please let me know!

The image on the right is the gate to the highly secretive Worcestershire Sauce factory, Lea and Perrins.

Worcestershire Sauce

Well I would be kidding myself if I didn't admit that this wasn't the most well known brand to come out of Worcester. Worcestershire Sauce makers Lea and Perrins have been in Worcester for many years. The first batch of Worcester sauce was completed in 1837. The recipe has been a closely guarded secret ever since and to this day the secret ingredient which makes Worcester Sauce so unique is still only known by a privileged few. Ingredients include Malt Vinegar, Spirit Vinegar, Molasses, Sugar, Salt, Anchovies, Tamarinds, Shallots or Onions, Garlic, Spices and Flavouring. The sauce gives a great kick to any number of dishes... yum yum! Visit the Lea and Perrins site to learn all sorts of facts about the history of Worcestershire Sauce and pick up some great recipes.

£20 Note

Much to the pleasure of Worcester Residents, we found ourselves on the back of the English £20 note as of 22nd June 1999. Pictured behind the great Edward Elgar, was the famous view of Worcester Cathedral...

World's Oldest Newspaper

Worcester has the privilege of having the longest running newspaper publication. Since 1690 the Berrows Worcester Journal (Originally called the Worcester Post-Man) has regularly arrived on the doorsteps of Worcester Residents. Although the Journal was not the first newspaper, it is the only paper from that era that still remains.

Kays Catalogue

The original jewllers in Worcester, owned by John Scarratt was set up in 1794. William Kilbourne Kay work in the business as an assistant in the 1870's before setting up his own business. So successful was this business that he was able to buy out the jewellers and so Kays was born. Kays is one of the UK's most successful mail order comapnies and it is and has been for sometime, one of the biggest employers in the area.

Please visit the Kays Heritage Group for more information.

English Motors

Few places left in the United Kingdom still make cars independently, The Morgan Motor Company, based in Malvern is one of the few companies left. Since 1910 they have been making sports cars, they are still made by hand today and have become particularly desirable across the pond. With a long waiting list and a high price tag, I won't be buying one any time soon!

Malvern Water

Worcestershire is also home to the famous Malvern Spring Water (since 1851), the water famous for containing absolutely nothing but pure old H20. This was the favourite spring water of Queen Victoria who visited Malvern regularly, along with many other Victorians, who believed the water had great healing properties.
