Twin Towns

Think Twice...

This short section takes a quick look at the towns around the World which are twinned with Worcester here in the UK.

Worcester and County (MA, USA)

Worcester in Massachusetts is also the capital of it's county of the same name, Worcester County. The city is the 3rd largest in New England and took its name from Worcester in the UK. Located on the Blackstone River, Worcester has an intersting history, it was a notable location for the abolitionist and suffragist movements in the 19th Century. Like Worcester in the UK, Worcester has seen fantatsic economical growth over the last few years. In many ways other than just the name, the two cities share many similarities.

Kleve (Germany)

Located in the North of Germany near the Rhine. This old city has a long history. Ruled by Counts from the 11th Century and by several different families for many years. The city took heavy damage in WWII. It has several attractions most notably an English Botanical Garden!

La Vesinet (France)

A small city on the edge of Paris, with a population of only 15,000. La Vesinet is a quiet plush town with a real French charm. The area is renowned for it's tree lined lanes, green parks, stone walls and quiet roads. It is both a contrast of traditional and modern living with plenty of french chic. It has a vibrant market and many wonderful shops and restaurants. Great for getting away from the hustle and bustle of Paris.

Jerez De La Frontera (Spain)

Worcester was only recently twinned with Jerez in an attempt to aid and promote small businesses in both cities, who are in danger of dissapearing as a result of competition from big supermarkets. Small shops cannot compete on price or range of producs and so are forced to sell up. This ebs away at the charm of high streets across the world where little shops can offer unique products not to be found anywhere else. The twinning with Jerez is part of an international scheme to help prevent this from happening.

Jerez is famous for its sweet wines (Sherry), Shakepeare himself is supposed to have praised it! In addition Jerez is famous for its flamenco dancers and finely bread horses. For more information Click Here
